Why isn't my EV charging?

Troubleshoot common issues with starting and running an EV charging session.

Overview

Most EV charging issues fall into one of a few categories: the EV option isn't appearing in the app, charging isn't starting after you plug in, or the charger has a hardware issue. Work through the checks below to find the cause.

The EV option doesn't appear when I tap Start parking

The Do you want to charge your EV today? prompt only shows if all of these are true:

  • An EV space is available

  • You have access to the EV spaces at that parking facility

  • You have an electric vehicle added to your profile

If you don't see the prompt, check that your EV is on your profile. See Add or remove a vehicle from your profile for how.

My session has started but no kWh is being added

If your session shows as charging but the kWh count isn't increasing, the charging may not have actually started. Check the following at the charger:

  • Make sure the charging cable is fully plugged into your vehicle and the charger

  • Look at the charger's display or indicator lights — most chargers show whether they are actively charging, idle, or in an error state

  • Unplug the cable, wait a few seconds, and plug it back in

If you started your session with an RFID card, tap your card on the charger again to make sure the charging session was registered.

If kWh still isn't being added, contact your parking administrator — the issue may be with the physical charger and they can arrange to have it reset or inspected.

The charger is offline or showing an error

If the charger isn't responding, you can try another EV space if one is available — see how to change your space during an active session.

If no other EV space is available, contact your parking administrator. The physical chargers are typically managed by the building or property management team, who can either reset the charger or arrange for a technician to inspect it.

My charging stopped unexpectedly

Sometimes a charger may error and stop charging before your vehicle is fully charged. Try unplugging the cable and plugging it back in to restart charging.

If the same charger keeps stopping early, let your parking administrator know so they can have it checked.

My charging stopped but my parking session is still running

If your charging finishes (or stops due to a charger error) before you end your parking session, you'll continue to be charged for parking until you stop the session in the app.

If you're staying parked, this is fine. If you're leaving, open the Parkable app and tap Stop parking to end your session — see How to stop an EV charging session for full details.

The charging cable is stuck in my car

Most EVs have a safety feature that prevents the charging cable from being unlocked while the car is locked. Unlock your vehicle and try again.

Tip: When pulling the cable out, sometimes giving it a quick push in first will release it. Push in, then pull — usually in one motion.

The charging cable is stuck in the charger

Try the following in order:

  1. Firmly press the cable into the connector

  2. Start a charging session and wait for the LED on the charger to turn blue

  3. Stop the charging session

  4. If the cable is still stuck, press the cable into the connector again firmly and try removing it

If the cable still won't release, contact Parkable support — we can unlock the cable from our end.

Can I stop a charge before it's finished?

Yes. See How to stop an EV charging session for how. You'll need to unlock your vehicle to disconnect the cable after stopping.
