Why are parking fees higher when sessions span night and day rate periods?

How charges are calculated when your parking session crosses from one rate period into another.

Overview

If your parking facility has both a night rate and a day rate, your session can span both periods if you start in one and finish in the other. When that happens, you're charged separately for each period β€” which can make the total higher than you'd expect from a session that sits inside a single rate.

For the basics on how each rate works, see How do pricing rates work with early bird and night rates?.

How charges are split

Each rate period has its own cap (for example, the night rate might cap at 6 hours, the day rate at 12 hours). When a session spans both periods:

  1. The time you parked during the night rate period is charged at the night rate, up to its cap

  2. The time you parked during the day rate period is charged at the day rate, up to its cap

Each period's cap is calculated independently, so you can hit two caps in a single session.

Examples

  • Starting before 6:00 AM: Park from 5:45 AM into the morning. The night rate applies until 6:00 AM; the day rate applies after that.

  • Overnight parking: Park from 11:00 PM to 9:00 AM. The night rate applies for the late-night portion, then the day rate applies from when the day rate window starts.

How to avoid this

  • Plan your start and end times so your session sits within a single rate period where possible

  • Check the Pricing screen for your parking facility before starting β€” it shows the rate windows and caps so you can estimate the cost

  • End your session as soon as you leave so you don't accidentally extend into the next rate period
